Description
Hugel Alsace Pinot Gris Classic is made by the Hugel and Fils winery in Alsace, a family house with origins in the 15th century and a member of the Henokiens association of bicentennial family businesses. Pinot Gris is one of the four noble grapes of Alsace and gives the fullest, most textured of the region's dry whites, with an aromatic, faintly oily character. Alsace sits in the rain shadow of the Vosges mountains, which gives it one of the driest, sunniest climates in France; that reliable ripening builds the ripe stone fruit and honeyed weight, while the region's varied soils keep the wine grounded and dry. This Classic bottling is made fresh and dry, without the residual sugar of the estate's sweeter cuvées, to show clean varietal fruit. It pours pale gold. The nose is expressive, with yellow melon, golden apple and ripe apricot over white flowers and a touch of ginger spice. The palate is dry and rounded, with a honeyed weight and fresh acidity holding it together to a gently spiced finish. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees.
