A Martinique agricole from Distillerie du Simon under the HSE label, aged around six years and finished in ex-Kilchoman Islay whisky casks, an unsweetened cane-juice rum at 44% with a peaty twist.
Description
HSE is a Martinique house known for adventurous cask finishes, with the rum distilled at Distillerie du Simon on a creole column from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice. This 2016 release was aged around six years before a finish in casks that previously held Kilchoman, an Islay single malt, and it carries no added sugar.
At 44% this is a dry, AOC-style agricole given an unusual smoky edge. The grassy, vegetal cane core typically gains vanilla and oak with age, while an Islay-cask finish can lend a whisper of peat smoke and maritime character over the top. A distinctive pour for drinkers who enjoy where agricole and whisky overlap.
