A nine year Martinique agricole from HSE finished in Sauternes casks at 41%, honeyed and dry with yellow fruits, pineapple and a touch of glue over spice and oak, a balanced, characterful sweet-wine finished vieux.
Description
HSE built its reputation partly on cask finishes, and this 2005 takes an agricole distilled on the creole column from fresh cane juice and finishes it in Sauternes wine casks. The sweet-wine cask leaves a clear, well-judged mark while the rum stays unsweetened in the AOC tradition.
Nine years of tropical ageing gives it depth at a gentle 41%. The nose is honeyed and fruity with yellow fruits, pineapple and a faint glue-like ester note, while the palate balances spice, honey and yellow fruit against a dry backbone. The finish is honeyed and woody with a sour, slightly astringent edge. The Sauternes integration is the highlight here, lending richness without tipping into sweetness. Balanced and expressive, it is a fine example of HSE's finishing work and an inviting, slow sipping vieux.
