HSE Grande Reserve XO is a six-year Martinique agricole from Distillerie du Simon, distilled from fresh cane juice on a creole column and aged in ex-bourbon oak, a dry, wood-forward style with tobacco, roasted coffee, nutmeg and vanilla over dried fruit at 43%.
Description
HSE, from the Habitation Saint-Etienne house, is a Martinique rhum agricole carrying the island's AOC, made from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice distilled on a creole column at low strength. Its Grande Reserve XO takes the top standard age mention, requiring at least six years in oak, and is bottled unsweetened in keeping with the AOC's ban on added sugar.
This is the drier, more wood-forward side of aged agricole. The nose moves from vanilla and sugarcane into barrel and spice, leading to a palate of dry oak, vanilla, nutmeg and dried fruit, finishing on roasted coffee, tobacco and toasted wood. Martinique's tropical heat ages the spirit quickly, so six years yields real depth and structure. At 43% it is smooth yet characterful, a dependable reference for the grassy-turned-spicy Martinique style that drinks well neat or alongside a cigar, appealing especially to those who enjoy dry, oak-driven spirits.
