High Spirits Collection Diamond (Port Mourant) Demerara Rum 2001

High Spirits Collection bottled this single cask of Port Mourant marque from the Diamond estate, the heavy double wooden greenheart pot still profile that defines old Guyana, here presented at an unusually approachable 47.7 percent. The lower strength and 20 years of ageing make for an elegant, almost single malt like reading of a normally fierce marque.

Unsweetened and matured with a port cask influence, the molasses spirit shows green fruit, citrus and varnish on the nose, then a woody, roasted and fruity palate with herbs and menthol, closing on smoke, spice and leather. All the Port Mourant signatures are present, the licorice, the rusty wood, the herbal edge, but delivered with poise rather than aggression. This is an easy drinking, balanced pour for anyone who wants the PM character in a refined, whisky adjacent format that does not demand cask strength stamina.
