El Mozo Wines make Herrigoia in Lanciego, Rioja Alavesa, from old-vine Tempranillo with a little Malvasia. Made by carbonic maceration with natural and organic farming, it is a bright, fresh red bursting with red fruit and floral lift.
Description
Herrigoia is the work of El Mozo Wines, a family winery in Lanciego in Rioja Alavesa, now in its third generation. Their nine hectares are split into eighteen small plots around the village, some of them old vines, farmed organically. The wine is Tempranillo with a touch of Malvasia, made by carbonic maceration, where whole bunches ferment in a sealed tank under carbon dioxide so fermentation begins inside each berry. This method emphasises bright, juicy fruit and floral aromatics while keeping tannin and extraction low, giving a light, fresh and immediate style. The cool nights and limestone-clay soils of the Alavesa preserve acidity and lift the perfume. Made naturally with minimal intervention, the wine is brilliant cherry in the glass, with a nose of fresh red berries, cherry and a floral rose and violet note. The palate is light and lively, with crunchy red fruit, a herbal edge and soft, easy tannins. Serve lightly chilled, at 14 to 15 degrees. It is an everyday red that suits charcuterie and lighter meats, and can be drunk on its own.
