Description
El Pedal Blanco comes from Viñedos Hermanos Hernaiz, the family behind the well-known Finca la Emperatriz in Rioja. It sits in the Zone Wines range, for which the winery draws Viura from various plots across the Rioja Alta, using the differing soils and microclimates to build a wine with a fresh, fruity profile. Viura, the region's main white grape, is prized for its bright acidity and clean orchard fruit when picked early and made without oak, as it is here. The Rioja Alta lies at higher elevation than the rest of the region, and the cooler air and marked day-to-night temperature swing preserve acidity and aromatic freshness while the grapes ripen. The wine is made and bottled young to keep that immediacy, with no wood to cover the fruit. It is pale straw with green highlights, showing green apple, lemon and pear on the nose over white flowers and citrus peel. The palate is dry, light and crisp, with fresh acidity and a clean finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
