From Finca La Emperatriz in Rioja, this single-vineyard Viura is aged on its lees. It shows lemon, green apple and pear with a saline, stony edge and a rounder texture from time on the lees.

Description
El Jardín de la Emperatriz Blanco is made by Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz at Finca La Emperatriz in Rioja, and it carries Viñedo Singular status, the region's classification for distinctive single vineyards. The grape is Viura, Rioja's principal white, here taken from one named site rather than blended across many. Viura is naturally low in aromatics and holds acidity well, which suits a vineyard-focused wine meant to show place over technique. After fermentation the wine is aged on its fine lees, and this contact adds a subtle textural weight and a savoury undertone while keeping the fruit fresh. The result is dry and lightly built at 13.4 percent. The colour is pale lemon. The nose is restrained, with lemon, green apple and pear and a whiff of white flowers over a stony, faintly saline note. The palate is crisp and precise, the lees giving a fuller mid-palate before a clean, mineral finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees.
