Herenza is a kosher single variety Tempranillo from Elvi Wines in Rioja, drawn from a single hand harvested vineyard. Seven months in French and American oak give a supple, savoury red with red cherry, plum and gentle spice over a classic Rioja frame.
Description
Herenza is a certified kosher red made by Elvi Wines in the DOCa Rioja, built entirely from Tempranillo, the grape at the heart of the region. The fruit comes from a single vineyard and is picked by hand, then destemmed and pressed before fermenting in temperature controlled tanks at a maximum of 25 degrees, which preserves the bright primary fruit. Rioja Alta's clay and limestone soils and the cooling effect of altitude give Tempranillo its red fruit profile and firm but fresh acidity. The wine then rests for seven months in a mix of French and American oak barrels. The shorter ageing keeps the fruit forward while the barrels soften the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and add a measure of vanilla, coconut and sweet spice from the American oak alongside the tighter grain of the French. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose offers red cherry, raspberry and plum with a light dusting of oak spice and dried herbs. The palate is medium bodied, supple and savoury, finishing on red fruit and a touch of liquorice. Serve at 16 degrees in a standard red glass. It works well with roast meats and grilled poultry.
