Herència Altés make this Terra Alta white from Garnacha Blanca, a grape native to this corner of Catalonia. Fermented and aged five months in amphorae and cement, it shows green apple, white peach and a saline, herbal edge.
Description
Herència Altés was founded in Batea in 2009 by local agronomist Núria Altés and works organically across the hills of D.O. Terra Alta, the inland Catalan appellation where Garnacha Blanca has long been the signature white grape. The vineyards sit on limestone and clay soils under a Mediterranean climate tempered by the Cierzo wind, which keeps the fruit healthy and the acidity firm. La Musaranya is fermented and aged for around five months in amphorae and concrete rather than oak, vessels that allow gentle oxygen exchange and lees contact while adding no wood flavour, so the fruit and mineral character stay in the foreground. Fine lees held in an inert vessel build texture and a subtle savoury depth without softening the wine into richness. The result is pale straw in colour, with a nose of green apple, white peach and dried Mediterranean herbs over a stony, saline base. The palate is dry and textural, with clear acidity, a light phenolic grip from the amphora work and a savoury, salt-tinged finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a standard white glass. It suits grilled fish and shellfish, and stands up to garlic and olive oil.
