Herencia Altes makes this organic Garnacha Blanca in Terra Alta, the Catalan region that grows most of Spain’s white Grenache. From clay and limestone soils and rested on its lees, it is a textured white with white peach, pear and a herbal, Mediterranean lift.
Description
Herencia Altes is a small winery in Batea, in the D.O. Terra Alta in southern Catalonia, run by Nuria Altes. The wine is a single-variety Garnacha Blanca, the grape that dominates Terra Alta and accounts for a large share of the world's plantings, drawn from the estate's own organically farmed vineyards. The soils are clay and limestone, poor in organic matter, which naturally limits the vine's vigour and concentrates the fruit. The climate is Mediterranean with a continental influence, bringing warm days and cooler nights that let the grapes ripen fully while keeping their freshness. The wine is rested on its fine lees for a few months, a step that broadens the texture and gives Garnacha Blanca the weight it carries well, without any oak. It is pale gold in the glass, with a nose of white peach, pear and melon lifted by white flowers and a thread of dried thyme. The palate is dry and textured, riper and rounder than a coastal white but held together by fresh acidity through to a clean finish. Serve at 10 to 11 degrees. It suits grilled fish, roast chicken, vegetable dishes and hard cheeses.
