Herència Altés make this organic Terra Alta red from 100 percent Garnacha grown on clay and limestone in Batea. Hand harvested and aged just four months in foudre, it is fresh and floral with ripe redcurrant and raspberry fruit.
Description
Herència Altés works in the D.O. Terra Alta, one of the largest winegrowing regions in Catalonia, with this wine drawn entirely from Garnacha grapes grown in Batea, the town that holds more than half of the appellation's vineyards. The soils are rich in clay and limestone and poor in organic matter, conditions that limit vigour and naturally moderate yields, giving fruit with clear definition and freshness. Grapes are picked by hand into boxes and fermented at a controlled 23 to 24 degrees, with a short six day maceration to capture bright fruit while keeping tannins light. Ageing is brief, around four months in foudre, which softens the wine and adds a little roundness without masking the Garnacha character. This is an organic, early drinking style made to show the grape in its fresh form. The colour is a vivid medium ruby. The nose is candid and floral, with ripe redcurrant, raspberry and a hint of dried herbs. The palate is light to medium bodied, juicy and supple, with gentle tannins and a clean, fruit driven finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled in warm weather. It suits charcuterie, lighter meats and tomato based dishes.
