Description
Heras Cordón Vendimia Seleccionada is made by Bodegas y Viñedos Heras Cordón in D.O.Ca. Rioja, a coupage led by Tempranillo with small additions of Graciano and Mazuelo. The fruit comes from vines aged twenty-five to thirty-seven years in Laguardia, Elciego and Lapuebla in Rioja Alavesa and Cenicero and Fuenmayor in Rioja Alta. These stony plots lie at 550 metres on clay-limestone soils, where altitude and a moderate climate hold acidity and give slow, even ripening. Graciano contributes acidity and aromatic lift, Mazuela adds colour and grip, and the high stone content drains well and reflects heat onto the bunches. The wine ages thirteen months in American oak, which through gentle oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds vanilla, coconut and a warm spice frame. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose is vibrant, with fresh cherry and cassis cut by spicy ginger and a citrus edge. The palate is balanced and savoury, with fine acidity, supple tannins and an earthy, classic Rioja length. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb, grilled beef or mushroom dishes.
