Description
Na-Geanna, the geese in Irish, is one of the quieter labels to emerge from Cooley, the Co. Louth distillery John Teeling founded in 1987 to break the monopoly then held over Irish whiskey. A no age statement single malt, it was bottled for the Japanese market, where Cooley's independent stock found an early audience, and it seldom surfaces in Europe.
Cooley double distills its malt in the Scottish manner rather than following the Irish custom of triple distillation, keeping extra weight and cereal depth in the spirit. Maturation in ex-bourbon American oak brings vanilla and toasted coconut, and this bottling leans toward chocolate and toasted malt, softened by the orchard fruit typical of the distillery's unpeated make. Bottled at 40%, it is an approachable curio from the years when Cooley stood alone as independent Ireland's supplier.
