Weingut Heinrich makes this organic Pinot Noir at the foot of the Leitha hills in Burgenland. Limestone soils and a cool site give fresh red cherry, raspberry and a bright, savoury, low alcohol style.
Description
Weingut Heinrich farms organically by Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, eastern Austria, where the family has grown vines since 1730 but rose to prominence under Gernot Heinrich, who built a reputation for fine reds in a region better known for white wine. This Pinot Noir comes from the foot of the Leitha hills, where the soils are rich in limestone. The limestone gives the wine its bright acidity and fine, mineral structure, while the cool site and the moderating effect of the large, shallow lake keep ripening slow and the alcohol low at 12 percent, holding the fruit fresh and red rather than ripe. The wine ages in barrel, the oak giving a light frame and slow oxygen exchange in keeping with Pinot Noir's transparency. It pours a bright, translucent ruby and opens with red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, lifted by a floral note and an earthy, savoury depth, with a peppery edge. The palate is light to medium bodied, with crisp acidity, silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. Serve cool, at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits roast poultry, duck and mushroom dishes.
