Weingut Heinrich makes this natural red from Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and Saint Laurent grown either side of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland, Austria. Bright and unoaked in feel, it shows red cherry, plum and a peppery, earthy lift over fresh acidity.
Description
Heinrich Naked Red is a natural, organic and vegan blend of Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and Saint Laurent made by Weingut Heinrich in Burgenland, Austria. The fruit comes from both sides of Lake Neusiedl, a large shallow lake that moderates the climate. On the western shore the Leithaberg slopes bring limestone and shale, which lend freshness and a fine savoury grip, while on the eastern Parndorf plain the vines sit on deeper humus rich soils that add fruit and roundness. The grapes are hand picked from mid September into early October. Made as a low intervention wine, it ferments with native yeasts and sees ageing in older wood, so the emphasis is on bright fruit and freshness rather than oak. Zweigelt gives juicy red cherry, Blaufrankisch adds black pepper, dark berry and structure, and Saint Laurent lends a Pinot like silkiness. The wine is medium ruby, with a nose of red cherry, plum and a peppery, herbal lift. The palate is light to medium bodied, with crunchy red fruit, supple tannins, an earthy edge and lively acidity. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. A good all rounder with pork and roast chicken.
