Weingut Heinrich makes this organic Blaufränkisch in Burgenland, on the warm shores of Lake Neusiedl. Barrel ageing rounds out its dark cherry and plum fruit, peppery spice and a savoury, earthy backbone framed by fresh acidity.
Description
Weingut Heinrich is a leading name in Burgenland, the Austrian region around Lake Neusiedl that the family helped turn from white wine country into a source of serious reds. Since taking over in 1985, Gernot and Heike Heinrich have worked the estate organically. Blaufränkisch is the region's signature black grape, late ripening and naturally high in acidity and tannin. The large, shallow lake moderates the continental climate, holding warmth into autumn so the fruit ripens fully while cool nights preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Soils of gravel, loam and limestone give the wine its firm structure and savoury edge. Ageing in oak softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a light spice frame without masking the fruit. The wine is deep ruby, with a nose of dark cherry, plum and black pepper over earthy, herbal notes. The palate is medium bodied and structured, with red and black fruit, a peppery lift and bright acidity carrying a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted. It suits roast beef, game and hard alpine cheese.
