Havel CoCANE (Coconut & Rum)

CoCANE is a flavoured rum from Havel, built on a Panamanian base said to be fourteen years old and pot-distilled from molasses, then infused with coconut. Whatever age sits beneath, the coconut and sweetness lead, so this is best understood as a flavoured, sweetened product rather than a traditional aged sipper.

The nose and palate are dominated by coconut and tropical fruit, with banana and a touch of chocolate emerging alongside, and the finish carries spice and vanilla over a medium length. It is very sweet, and several drinkers note it strays a long way from what a classic rum tastes like, suggesting it shines best mixed with cola or served as a dessert pour. At a low 35% it is soft and easy. Taken honestly as a coconut rum liqueur, it delivers exactly the sweet, tropical character it sets out to.
