A four-year Martinique VSOP from Saint James bottled by Hardy at 42%, a softer aged agricole leaning sweet and caramel-led on the nose with brown sugar and vanilla, though light and lean across the palate.
Description
Saint James has made Martinique agricole since 1765 and is among the island's largest houses, recognisable by its squared bottle. This Tartane Vieux VSOP, bottled under the Hardy name, is a four-year aged agricole from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice, distilled on a column still and matured in ex-bourbon, qualifying for the AOC VSOP tier.
Released at 42% with no added sugar, it noses sweet and inviting with caramel, brown sugar and vanilla, the wood having softened the cane into a gentler, dessert-leaning aroma. The palate, however, runs lighter and leaner than the nose promises, with a thin, slightly alcoholic feel and a faint bitter edge on the close. It reads as an easy, accessible aged agricole rather than a deep one, best understood as a gentle introduction to the vieux style or a casual neat pour rather than a rum to dwell over.
