A young Martinique vieux from Saint James bottled by Hardy, three years in ex-bourbon oak, with vanilla, spice and wood over a fruity core finishing on mocha and coffee, easy and unsweetened at 42%.
Description
Saint James has made Martinique agricole since 1765 and ranks among the island's largest houses, instantly known by its squared bottle. This Tartane Vieux VO, bottled by Hardy, qualifies as a vieux under the AOC, meaning at least three years in oak, here from fresh cane juice matured in ex-bourbon barrels and bottled at 42%.
At the entry of the aged tier the spirit keeps an approachable, gentle character, the cask adding vanilla, baking spice and wood to a fruity base without burying it. The palate carries spice, wood, a touch of mocha and ripe fruit, and the finish leans into mocha and coffee. Unsweetened and balanced, it reads as a soft, undemanding introduction to aged agricole rather than a deep or assertive expression, an easygoing everyday pour for those new to the style or after something uncomplicated.
