    Harahorn Norwegian Orange Dry Gin

    500 ml / 42%
    New Western

    $45

Lemon, lime and orange tumble over juniper and a tart streak of rhubarb, with caraway adding a savoury edge underneath. Distilled in tiny 400-litre batches from a potato spirit base on Norway’s south coast, it folds in wild marjoram, blueberries and seaweed. Long, fresh and unmistakably Nordic.

Harahorn is made at Det Norske Brenneri in Grimstad, founded in 2011 as Norway's first private distillery in over eighty years. The name belongs both to a nearby mountain and to a creature of Norwegian folklore, a wild hare crowned with antlers. Unusually, the spirit starts from potatoes rather than grain, then takes on juniper, angelica and a roll-call of regional botanicals such as blueberries, wild marjoram, caraway, seaweed and rhubarb. This Orange edition builds on the standard gin with extra lemons, limes and oranges, and is limited to 400 litres per batch.

The nose is clean and bright, juniper meeting citrus and a tart hint of rhubarb. The palate carries lemon and orange over resinous juniper, with rhubarb and a savoury caraway lift that keeps it from turning sweet, before a long, fresh finish. Best enjoyed neat over ice, or in a simple gin and tonic with a slice of orange.
