Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture operated until 2000 and produced the stock that later underpinned Ichiro Akuto's bottling programme. Scarecrow, a blended malt expression bottled in 2005 for the German market, draws on ten years of maturation in heavily charred oak casks, which is an unusual specification in the Hanyu catalogue where Ex-Bourbon and wine finishes dominate.

Heavy charring creates a thick carbon layer inside the cask that filters the spirit and drives a pronounced toasted grain, smoke-tinged vanilla and char-derived sweetness rather than the fruit-forward or sherry-led profiles of the more celebrated Hanyu single cask releases. At 40% and packaged in the 720ml format typical of older Japanese export bottlings for European markets, Scarecrow is a modest and approachable entry point into the Hanyu estate, made at a time when interest in the closed distillery was still building.
