Coal-gas, smoke and a toasted edge from a 2000 vintage Hanyu single cask matured in a Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butt, bottled at 58% cask strength for a global release in 2008 after just 8 years, a dense and characterful expression from the closed Saitama distillery’s last year of production.

Description
Hanyu 8 Years Old 2000 is a single cask single malt distilled in 2000 at the closed Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture and bottled in 2008 at cask strength for global distribution. At 8 years old this is among the youngest of the Hanyu single cask releases, drawn from the distillery's final year of production before the closure that same year.
Matured throughout in a Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butt, the cask has worked hard over a relatively short span: coal-gas, smoke and a toasted note in the profile suggest a spirit that still carries considerable raw distillate character even as the sherry butt has begun to layer its dried fruit and spice. At 58% cask strength the combination is assertive and direct, more about energy and raw material than the mellowness of older Hanyu expressions. The 2000 vintage provenance makes it a historically significant fragment of the distillery's final chapter.
