Description
Hanyu was a single malt distillery in Saitama Prefecture, built by Toa Shuzo, that distilled its last spirit in 2000 before closure. This single cask was drawn from an American Oak Refill Sherry Butt, a cask that has the fruit and structure of sherry maturation but gives it more gently given the refill status, and was bottled in 2008 after eight years.
At 60.5% this is among the more powerful official Hanyu single cask releases. The refill sherry butt yields dark dried fruit and a polished, rounded oak base while the relatively short maturation period preserves a raw, energetic grain note underneath. American Oak contributes coconut and vanilla alongside the sherry-driven fruit, producing a layered cask strength expression from the distillery's final vintage year.
