Hanyu 20 Years Old is a blended expression linked to the closed Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture, bottled at cask strength for the Netherlands market. At 48% and with 20 years of Ex-Bourbon maturation, this represents the older side of the Hanyu blended output, a category that ran alongside the single malt single cask releases that became the centrepiece of Ichiro Akuto's rescue effort after Toa Shuzo's distillery closed in 2000.
The Ex-Bourbon maturation over two decades would have built a gentle vanilla and cereal-led profile, with the blend format suggesting a broader, more even palate than a single cask expression. At 48% the ABV sits at the measured end of cask strength territory, and the Dutch market provenance suggests an export-oriented bottling rather than one aimed at the domestic Japanese audience.
