Hanyu 17 Years Old 1990 is a single cask single malt distilled at the closed Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture in 1990 and bottled in 2007 at cask strength by Ichiro Akuto. The maturation sequence combined Ex-Bourbon ageing with a sherry wood finish, bringing Oloroso influence to bear on a spirit already shaped by bourbon oak over the early years.

The tasting note of old wood is apt for a 1990 vintage whisky bottled at 17 years: by that age a well-used cask will have imparted considerable tannin and dry, dusty wood character alongside the residual dried fruit and spice of the sherry. At 54% the concentration is high without reaching the peak proof of some stablemate single casks, and the combination of old wood depth and sherry influence points to a mature, complex profile with the structural dryness of extended ageing.
