Description
Hanyu 17 Years Old 1990 is a single cask single malt distilled at the closed Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture in 1990 and bottled in 2007 at cask strength. Where many Hanyu releases involve bourbon or sherry cask sequences, this expression spent its full 17 years in a single new American oak hogshead, an unusual choice that amplifies fresh oak character from the first year of maturation.
New American oak gives a very different result from seasoned Ex-Bourbon wood: more assertive vanilla and coconut in the early years, building into toasted oak spice and a characteristic sweetness as the spirit matures. Without the softening influence of a previous spirit to pre-season the wood, the tannin contribution is also more marked. At 54.2% this is a direct, wood-forward single cask that shows a less-seen side of the Hanyu catalogue.
