Description
Hanyu, Saitama Prefecture's closed single malt distillery, produced its final spirit in 2000 and the casks were subsequently stewarded by Ichiro Akuto and his partners. Cask 957, a single American Oak Hogshead, was selected for bottling in 2014 after 14 years and allocated to the French retailer La Maison du Whisky, one of the independent partners responsible for some of the most systematically documented Hanyu single cask releases.
Matured without a secondary finish, the hogshead gives the distillery's typical vanilla and dried apple alongside a gentle spiced oak note that comes with longer American oak contact. At 59.9% cask strength the spirit is full-bodied but not aggressive, with the 14-year maturation having softened the grain edges while preserving the sharp, clean distillery character that made Hanyu so widely sought after following its closure.
