Description
Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture was closed in 2000, and the recovery of its casks by Ichiro Akuto led to a series of bottlings that covered a wide range of experimental finishes. This 2000 vintage single cask followed Ex-Bourbon maturation with a Cognac Cask finish before bottling in 2014 at 58.5% for Japan.
The Cognac Cask finish draws a direct line to the French brandy tradition, adding dried vine fruit, warm grape spirit and a subtle oak spice that sits alongside rather than over the bourbon base. The noted coal-gas character is an uncommon but recorded flavour trace in certain Hanyu expressions, sitting as a faint background note beneath the fruit-forward finish. At cask strength the interplay between the maturation phases is clear, and the Japanese market release status makes this one of the less widely distributed single cask expressions from the closed Saitama site.
