Description
Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture closed in 2000, and the casks bottled from its 2000 vintage represent some of the last spirit laid down there. This expression, drawn from an American Oak Puncheon after 12 years and bottled in 2012, was released for an event market rather than general distribution, making it among the more selectively placed official bottlings from the Hanyu estate.
The puncheon format holds more spirit than a standard hogshead and allows slower, more even wood extraction, which typically produces a rounder, spice-forward profile. American Oak gives vanilla, coconut and an underlying warm spice, and without a sherry or wine finish the result is direct, grain-forward cask strength Hanyu at its most unadorned. The 60.1% bottling strength keeps the distillery character at full intensity.
