Description
Hanyu distillery in Saitama Prefecture was built by Toa Shuzo and closed in 2000, with the remaining casks rescued and bottled by Ichiro Akuto over the following years. This single cask from the 2000 distillation was matured in Ex-Bourbon for ten years and released by the distillery in 2010 at 59% cask strength for global distribution.
Without a secondary finish or unusual wood, this expression shows the Hanyu house character in its most unobstructed form: vanilla, light grain, dried orchard fruit and a faint cereal sweetness that the Ex-Bourbon cask draws out without adding competing notes of its own. The 2010 bottling places it in the first wave of official single cask releases from the 2000 vintage, before the more elaborately finished expressions began to appear. Its straightforward character makes it a useful reference point for the distillery's base spirit.
