Hans Baer is the fresh, modern face of Rheinhessen, Germany’s largest wine region. This dry Riesling is aged on its lees at a low 11.5 per cent alcohol, giving a bright, aromatic white of green apple, lemon and white peach with a mineral edge.
Description
Hans Baer comes from Rheinhessen, the largest wine region in Germany, set on the rolling hills of Rhineland-Palatinate. The label represents a younger, modern take on German Riesling, made in a clean, dry style. Rheinhessen has a relatively mild, sheltered climate with limestone, loess and slate soils, and this mix of warmth and stony ground ripens Riesling while the cool nights hold on to the sharp acidity that carries the wine. The grapes are picked to keep the style trocken, or dry, at a low 11.5 per cent alcohol, so the wine stays light and refreshing. It is aged on its fine lees, a period of contact that slowly draws texture and a subtle savoury note from the spent yeast and rounds the otherwise racy palate. There is no oak, keeping the fruit and mineral character clear. The colour is pale lemon with green highlights. The nose is bright, with green apple, lemon, white peach and white flowers over a mineral edge. The palate is dry, light and crisp, the citrus and apple fruit carried by keen acidity to a clean, faintly saline finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits fresh fish and lighter dishes.
