An eight year old pure single Jamaican from Hampden, all pot still, with banana, tropical fruit and an estery glue lift kept friendly and unsweetened at 46%, a fine first step into Trelawny funk.
Description
This is Hampden Estate, the Trelawny distillery that is the reference point for high-ester Jamaican funk. The label reads Pure Single Jamaican Rum, meaning it is made entirely on pot stills at a single distillery, the strongest quality signal the category offers. Hampden works in the old way, with long wild fermentation, dunder and muck pits feeding its double-retort pot stills, and crucially no additives.
At eight years and 46% this is a more restrained, approachable expression than the distillery's overproof and high-mark bottlings, which lets the house character read clearly without overwhelming. Expect ripe banana, pineapple and tropical fruit with the signature varnish and glue lift of the esters, then woody spice and warmth on the finish from ex-bourbon ageing. It is bone dry, with funk framed as a feature rather than smoothed away. For anyone curious about Jamaican pot-still rum it is an ideal stepping stone, equally at home as a daily sipper or the backbone of a Mai Tai.
