A single cask eight year old Hampden at the lighter OWH end of the marque scale, balancing ripe banana, pineapple and esters with toasted oak and a dry finish, unsweetened and approachable at 46%.
Description
This is a single cask Hampden, an eight year old Jamaican pure single rum from the Trelawny estate that is the reference point for high-ester funk. Hampden works the traditional way, with wild fermentation, double retort pot stills, dunder and muck pits and no additives, but the marque here is OWH, which sits at the lighter, lower-ester end of the distillery's range rather than at the explosive top.
That choice of marque is the key to the bottle's character: the signature Hampden banana, pineapple and ester lift are all there, with a faint touch of nail polish, but they come in a calmer, more drinkable form than the distillery's overproof funk bombs. Ex-bourbon ageing adds toasted oak, and the finish runs dry and spicy. Bottled unsweetened at 46%, it makes an excellent gateway to pure Jamaican pot still rum, expressive enough to show the house style yet easy enough for daily drinking or a serious cocktail.
