A 2021 Hampden Great House at 55%, pot still Jamaican character leaning fruity and spicy rather than wild, grilled pineapple and overripe banana over dry, woody tobacco, unsweetened and best with a little air in the glass.
Description
Hampden Great House Distillery Edition 2021 is another in the estate's celebrated annual series, a pot still Jamaican blend aged seven years in ex-bourbon oak and bottled at 55% with nothing added. As with the wider Great House line, it is a vatting built around Hampden's lighter marques with a controlled high ester fraction, aiming for roundness rather than the explosive top of the scale.
Hampden's hallmark is high ester rum made the traditional way, double-retort pot stills, long wild fermentation and muck pits, and no additives. This edition leans fruity and spicy rather than extreme, with grilled pineapple, overripe banana and solvent esters on the nose and a palate of tropical fruit, spice and esters drying into peppery, leathery, woody tobacco on a long finish. Round, balanced and clearly Hampden, it is a dry, characterful Jamaican that rewards a little air, sipped neat by drinkers who already enjoy the house funk.
