Description
Selected by Oldman Spirits for its Flensburg Rum Company label, this is Hampden HLCF, a young single cask aged two years and finished in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask at 53.2%. Hampden's reliably funky pot-still spirit meets a richly sweet European wine cask, and the PX leaves a clear mark.
From the double-retort pot still and molasses, it shows sherry, funk and overripe fruit on the nose, then sherry, tropical fruit and overripe notes on the palate with raisins and red fruit softening the glue and ester underneath. The finish turns sweet and spicy with pineapple and barrel. The PX influence is pronounced, so while the rum is honest pot-still Hampden at heart, the cask adds real richness and a juicy, easy-drinking edge. Its added-sugar status is unconfirmed, the sweetness here clearly cask-derived. A bold, fun bottling, good neat or in a big cocktail.
