Hacienda Solano Viñas Viejas is an old-vine Tempranillo from La Aguilera in Ribera del Duero, the Cubillo family’s project with Sophie Khün. Twelve months in French oak frame deep black fruit, spice and smoke on a structured, high-altitude palate.
Description
Hacienda Solano Viñas Viejas is made by the Cubillo family in La Aguilera near Burgos, in the high north-eastern reaches of Ribera del Duero, with Sophie Khün and Toni Sarrión in technical charge. The wine is a single-variety Tempranillo, the local Tinta del País, from old family vineyards farmed under respectful agriculture on the limestone and sandy soils that define this elevated, cooler corner of the D.O. Altitude and a sharp day-to-night temperature swing slow ripening and lock in colour, ripe tannin and freshness, while the age of the vines lowers yields and concentrates the fruit. Ageing runs twelve months in French oak, where gradual oxygen exchange through the staves resolves the firm tannins and adds spice and a subtle toasty edge that supports the dark fruit. The colour is deep and mature, and the nose leads with black plum and cherry over black pepper, liquorice, smoke and dried herbs. The palate is full and structured, with grainy ripe tannins, bright acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting ahead, with roast and grilled red meats.
