Description
Hacienda López de Haro is a Rioja estate working in the traditional white Gran Reserva style, a category defined by long ageing that is now rare. This wine comes from Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasia and spends thirty-six months in French and Eastern European oak barrels, part of a total ageing of at least four years before release. That extended time in wood allows slow, controlled oxygen exchange through the barrel, which develops the wine's colour and layers in nutty, toasty complexity, while the oak itself contributes vanilla and spice. Viura provides the structure and acidity to carry all of this over the years. The 2014 pours deep gold, with an evolved nose of toasted bread, hazelnut, dried apricot and beeswax over honey and sweet oak spice. The palate is broad and layered, with the fruit turned candied and savoury, held together by fresh acidity that keeps the long finish from feeling heavy. This is a white for those who enjoy intensity and age. Serve it cool but not cold, around 11 to 13 degrees, in a large glass.

A wine for richer plates, from roast chicken and turkey to grilled oily fish such as tuna. The oxidative, nutty character also complements aged hard cheeses and a mushroom risotto.
