Habla makes this single-vintage Malbec on the warm Trujillo estate in Extremadura, in western Spain near the Portuguese border. Organically farmed and aged twelve months in oak, it shows ripe cherry, dark plum and a toasted, faintly menthol edge.
Description
Habla works from the Trujillo estate in Extremadura, in the far west of Spain on the Portuguese border, where hot days hold their warmth into the evening. The Nº range is built as a succession of single releases rather than a fixed blend, and Nº37 is the 2022 Malbec edition. The continental climate and granite-influenced soils ripen Malbec fully, giving deep colour and concentrated dark fruit, while the wide gap between daytime heat and cooler nights preserves acidity and keeps the wine fresh rather than heavy. Farming is organic. The wine spends twelve months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and folds in vanilla, cocoa and a light toast that frames the fruit. It pours a deep cherry red with purple glints. The nose carries ripe cherry and plum, red berries and a toasted, faintly menthol note from the wood. On the palate it is full and rounded, with ripe tannin, black pepper spice and a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead. It suits grilled and roasted red meats.
