Habitation Velier Hampden Spirits in the sky HGML 2017

Spirits in the Sky is a single-cask Hampden bottled under Habitation Velier's Pure Single Rum line, drawn from the HGML marque, distilled in 2017 and bottled at six years old. Hampden in Trelawny is the reference point for high-ester Jamaican funk, and HGML sits well up that scale, so this is loud, full-proof pot-still spirit presented exactly as Velier prefers: single distillery, no additives, no compromise.

Distilled on Hampden's double-retort pot stills and matured in ex-bourbon oak under tropical heat, it pours overripe pineapple, ester and a sour, glue-edged funk, then turns intense and fruity on the palate before a finish of citrus, barrel, brine and a salty, smoky, almost meaty BBQ note. Unsweetened and bottled at a fierce 64.5%, it needs plenty of air and ideally a few drops of water to open. This is a modern high-ester benchmark for committed Hampden drinkers, not an easy first step into the style.
