A cask strength Hampden LROK single cask from Habitation Velier, huge with pineapple, banana and vanilla over oily pot still weight, the tropical funk turned up loud and dry across nine years in the islands at 63.2% for serious sipping.
Description
Habitation Velier is Velier's Pure Single Rum line, pot still and single distillery at full proof, and this is a single cask Hampden LROK distilled in 2010 and selected for the Salon du Rhum. Hampden is the reference point for high-ester funk, and LROK sits in the fuller ester band of ripe tropical fruit.
Nine years of tropical ageing concentrates everything. Distilled from molasses on a double-retort pot still and matured in ex-bourbon wood, it carries pineapple, banana, vanilla and ester on the nose, then turns oily and mouth-coating with more pineapple and tropical fruit before a nutty, roasted, woody finish. Bottled at 63.2% and unsweetened, the alcohol is well integrated but the strength is real, making this a concentrated, complex pour rather than an easy one, aimed at drinkers who want classic Hampden in overdrive.
