Habitation Velier Amrut Pure Sugar Cane Juice Rum 2022

This pure sugar cane juice rum was made by Amrut in India for Habitation Velier, the Pure Single Rum line from the Genoese house, and bottled unsweetened at a raw 62.8 percent. Distilled from fresh pressed cane juice on a pot still rather than molasses, it makes it an agricole style spirit, though outside the French islands it must be named as cane juice rum, and this is an unaged, full proof example.

With no cask ageing, the cane shows in the raw, with a nose of sugarcane, vegetal notes, raspberry and a sweet edge, a palate of sugarcane, floral notes, spice and clear alcohol, and a rough, dirty, floral finish. It is intense, grassy and polarising, capable of swinging from raw cane to funkier sweat and green pepper. The high proof and vegetal punch make it divisive neat, but it comes into its own as a powerful mixer and an unusual, characterful daiquiri base.
