A dark old Martinique vieux from the 1970 harvest, eight years in ex-bourbon oak giving figs, vanilla and pipe tobacco over a soft woody, roasted core, bottled at a gentle 45% from fresh cane juice at Habitation Saint-Étienne.
Description
This Habitation Saint-Étienne Vieux Agricole carries a 1970 vintage and eight years in oak, a survivor from an earlier era of Martinique distilling bottled at an easy 45%. Made from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice rather than molasses, it shows the depth that decades of bottle age and tropical maturation bring to an agricole.
The colour runs dark while the body stays surprisingly light on the palate. Ex-bourbon ageing has layered in dried figs, vanilla and a distinct leaf of tobacco that emerges with time in the glass, the taste soft and woody with a roasted, almost coffee edged warmth. The finish lingers on toasted oak, more roasted notes and dried fruit. A contemplative pour that rewards patience over ice cold serving, and a quiet piece of Martinique history.
