Felipe Gutiérrez de la Vega makes this natural sweet red from Monastrell in Valencia, named in his literary house style. Barrel ageing frames ripe plum, cherry and dried fig with a warm spice and a savoury Monastrell grip.
Description
Gutiérrez de la Vega is a small Valencia producer led by Felipe Gutiérrez de la Vega, known for natural sweet wines and for labels drawn from literature and music. This Monastrell grows in the warm Mediterranean climate of inland Valencia, where strong sunshine and a marked diurnal range let the grapes reach high sugar while holding their acidity. Limestone influenced soils give good drainage and a savoury thread that runs through the fruit. The wine is made sweet by halting fermentation before all the sugar converts, leaving natural residual sweetness rather than added spirit dominating, then aged in wood, where slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the tannins and adds vanilla and a baking spice depth. The colour is deep ruby moving to garnet. The nose leads with ripe plum and black cherry over dried fig, honey and a dusting of cocoa. The palate is rich and warming, the sweetness checked by Monastrell's firm grip and a peppery savoury edge that keeps it balanced. Serve at around 14C in a small glass, lightly chilled if you prefer. It pairs with chocolate desserts, hard mature cheese and dried fruit.
