Gut Oggau in Burgenland makes this natural rosé from Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt grown biodynamically beside Lake Neusiedl. Fermented with wild yeast and rested in barrel, Winifred is pale, dry and savoury, with redcurrant, white peach and a herbal, saline freshness.
Description
Winifred is the rosé in the Gut Oggau family of wines, made by Eduard and Stephanie Tscheppe on a 14 hectare estate at the edge of Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and certified by Demeter, with no chemical inputs, so the character of the site carries through to the glass. Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt give a rosé with more grip and savour than most, the large lake moderating temperature and lengthening the growing season while the schist and clay soils lend structure. This is a natural wine, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in old wood that adds texture without oak flavour, with minimal sulphur and no fining or filtration, so it shows a faint cloudiness and a slightly wild, vinous edge. The colour is pale onion skin. The nose is savoury and red fruited, with redcurrant, sour cherry and white peach over dried herbs and a stony note, and the palate is bone dry, textural and saline, finishing long and fresh. Serve lightly chilled at around 10 to 12 degrees in a standard wine glass, ideally with food. It suits white fish, roast chicken and fresh goats cheese.
