Description
Gut Oggau Weiss is a natural white from Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe, who took over 18 hectares of abandoned vineyards in Burgenland in 2007 and farmed them biodynamically from the start. It blends Gruner Veltliner, Weissburgunder, Gewurztraminer and Welschriesling, a field mix that gives the wine both the peppery structure of Gruner and the perfume of Gewurztraminer. The Burgenland climate around the Neusiedlersee is warm and sunny with a moderating lake effect, and the biodynamic farming aims for regional, expressive fruit. The wine is aged in wood and made with minimal intervention, using wild yeasts and little added sulphur, which leaves a faint natural spritz and a savoury, textured character. This is a 2016 with bottle age, so the primary fruit has begun to develop. The colour is deep yellow. The nose is aromatic, with apricot, white peach, rose and fresh herbs lifted by ginger and pepper spice. The palate is dry, lightly effervescent and spicy, with a firm savoury structure and a long finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
