Description
Gut Oggau Timotheus is a natural white made in Burgenland, Austria, from Gruner Veltliner and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe took over the estate in 2007 and farm all their vineyards to Demeter biodynamic certification, with minimal intervention in the cellar. The site near Lake Neusiedl gives warm days moderated by the water and cool nights, a diurnal range that keeps the fruit fresh, while the mixed soils lend a stony backbone. Gruner Veltliner brings its signature peppery spice and green-apple bite, and Weissburgunder adds a rounder, softer texture. The wine is aged for twelve months in oak, used rather than new, so the wood gives slow oxygenation and structure rather than obvious flavour, and extended lees contact builds a textured, savoury palate. Fermentation runs on native yeasts with no additions. The colour is pale gold, sometimes lightly hazy in the natural style. The nose shows green apple, pear and lemon over black pepper, thyme and orchard blossom. The palate is dry and textured, the fresh acidity framed by gentle grip and a long, savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees.
