Gut Oggau’s Atanasius is a light, fresh natural red blending Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt from biodynamic Burgenland vineyards. At 12.4 percent it shows red cherry, raspberry and a subtle minerality, with bright acidity and gentle tannins.
Description
Atanasius is one of the younger, more approachable wines from Gut Oggau, the biodynamic Burgenland estate founded by Stephanie and Eduard Tscheppe and farmed under Demeter certification across fifteen hectares. It blends Blaufränkisch with Zweigelt, two Austrian red grapes grown on the limestone-rich soils around the Neusiedlersee, and is made naturally with minimal intervention and the vines' own yeasts. The result is deliberately light and fresh rather than structured, at a modest 12.4 percent, with around eleven months in wood that adds shape without heavy oak. Blaufränkisch contributes a peppery, savoury frame and Zweigelt brings juicy red cherry and a softer texture, the cool-climate site keeping acidity high and the fruit bright. The wine is light to medium ruby, with a nose of red cherry, raspberry and red currant lifted by a floral, subtly mineral note. The palate is fresh and easy, the tannins soft and the finish clean and lightly peppery. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, and it can take a slight chill in warm weather. It suits charcuterie, roast chicken and lighter pork dishes.
