Description
Domaine Guillot-Broux farms organically in the Macon, at the southern end of Burgundy, and Les Genievrieres is a Pinot Noir under the Macon appellation. Pinot Noir is a demanding, thin-skinned grape, sensitive in both vineyard and cellar, and organic farming here keeps the vines in balance on Burgundy's limestone and clay soils, which give the variety its perfume and fine tannin. The southern Burgundian climate is a touch warmer than the Cote d'Or, lending riper red fruit while the cool nights preserve acidity, holding alcohol to 13%. The wine spends 11 months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannin and adds a restrained spice frame without dominating the fruit. The colour is medium ruby. The nose is cherry and red berries, a savoury, earthy note and a touch of oak spice. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with red currant fruit, fine tannin, fresh acidity and a savoury finish that carries earth and gentle wood. Serve it at 15 to 16C in a Burgundy glass. It is a natural partner for roast poultry, game birds and mushroom dishes.
