Guelbenzu makes Evo from its own Finca La Lombana in Vierlas, Zaragoza, where the vines average around 20 years on gravel and sand left by the river. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano and Syrah, it shows blackcurrant, plum and pepper over firm oak.
Description
Guelbenzu Evo is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Graciano and Syrah grown at the winery's own Finca La Lombana in Vierlas, near Zaragoza, under the Vino de la Tierra Ribera del Queiles designation. The plot sits on fluvial soils of gravel and sand, free-draining ground that keeps yields low and concentrates the fruit, while the roughly 20-year-old vines push deeper for water and add structure. The plots are picked by hand and alcoholic fermentation runs in temperature-controlled stainless steel, which protects the bright, primary aromatics before the wine moves to barrel. Cabernet brings the backbone of firm tannin and blackcurrant, Syrah adds dark fruit and pepper, and Graciano lifts the acidity and colour. Oak ageing rounds the tannins and layers in vanilla and toast through slow oxygen exchange. The wine is deep ruby, the nose led by redcurrant and plum with black pepper, a eucalyptus edge and sweet spice from the wood. The palate is full and structured, the tannins ripe and grippy, the finish long and savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, with grilled and roasted red meat. Best given a year or two more in bottle if you prefer the tannins softer.
